After listening to this again, I'd like to retract some of my statements. Janet Jackson's new album leaked this afternoon so I'm glad I caught it as soon as it hit the Net. 20 Y.O is a good album, not masterpiece mayerial but good (I've been feeling this way about quite a few new big releases this year). The tracks are nice and sexy and she incorporates her trademark soft vocals into the hard-hitting beats. You have club dance beats (Show Me, Get It Out of Me, So Excited) which are all very typical of Janet. You have smooth midtempo joints (With You which bears a striking resemblance to Mariah's We Belong Together, as well as Call On Me and Enjoy). You have electro-sounds (This Body) dance pop (Daybreak) and sultry ballads (Take Care). Having to consistently put up with Jermaine's voice is kind of annoying. The album doesn't shit on her previous efforts such as the classic Janet album or the Velvet Rope, Rhythm Nation and Control albums. Even Damita Jo was an enjoyable listening experience in my opinion. 90's Janet couldn't go wrong. Millennium Janet is where she started going downhill (2001's All For You, for instance). But with this album, I think she pretty much redeemed herself and you could hear a lot of old-skool Janet in some of the tracks.
As unpopular as it was, I did love the Damita Jo album simply because she hired a number of different producers WITHOUT ditching Jam and Lewis. It definitely worked for her (she had Dallas Austin, Kanye West, Sean Garrett, Scott Storch, Cathy Dennis and Babyface, just in case you're wondering where I'm getting my list from I am going through my Damita Jo album booklet and the list of producers is pretty impressive). To me, that album is so underrated and didn't get its due-accolades because of the Superbowl debacle. OK cool. JD is your man. He produces music. But his hand is not as miraculous as it was when he resurrected Mariah's career with the brilliant Emancipation of Mimi album. Now that was one CD that made me say wow. Still, I will do my part and buy this next week just to get one over on a certain Mr Timberlake. Janet needs our support since MTV is still boycotting her music and hell, I've brought much worse (including the craptacular All For You CD).
I think JD did good but not outstanding as was the case with Mariah's fantastic Emancipation of Mimi album. JD and Mariah are well suited. Janet and JD are not as overwhelming. Her musical genius is in Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, just like how Timbaland's best work comes out in Justin Timberlake, just like how Rodney Jerkin's best work comes out in Brandy, just like how Rich Harrison's best work comes out in Amerie and you know, you get my drift. Good effort nonetheless, and it's exhilarating to know she had fun with the album.

This will be up for limited time only.
Dear Toya,
Janet Jackdson is too low. You know they invented something called a microphone and you can press the volume to make yourself louder. Can she not sing, so she's trying to hide but singing extremely low? I like her music, I just can't understand what the hell she's saying. Sorry Janet, and when's the wedding?
I'm nearly done listening to the album, and I think I like Damita Jo better but yes, throughout the whole album she is mumblimg.
Correction *mumbling*
Janet power to you for lossing all the weight and I hope you stay the way you are. There are too many people in the music business that look like they haven't eaten in there lives. I know you're stressed cause poeple are talking about your weight but that's no reason to become anorexic(sp).
Thanks Toya!!! Muahhhh!!!

Great album...Sounds very nice! Nice beats, nice hooks and sounds hot throughout!
nice 1 thanks, let's hope it a good album!
Her best albums are Janet (1993) and The Velvet Rope (1998). I am still undecided about THIS album but I did enjoy Damita Jo. I think it's an UNDERRATED album and was pushed under the carpet because of the Superbowl thing.

How Gay!
Rumors went flying after a "suspect" picture came out yesterday of singer Marques Houston sitting on the toilet with some "pretty" glasses. Bossip went fact checking and this picture is real and comes from a recent vacation with Chris Stokes (who manages Marques and who also was the director of Who Got Served) and Rome formerly of B2K.
There is rumor mongering that Chris Stokes turned Marques out a while ago as the two lived together for a while as adults. Verdict is still out on this one but this picture looks suspect as hell with MH rockin those metrosexual locs while on the toilet. The fact that Chris Stokes was nearby (in the hotel) while this picture was taken makes it even more suspect.

thanks
I thought this was about Janet!!!! Who cares if C.Stokes and MH are shagging? Good for them if they found happiness in eachother in this world...live and let live...Janet is GREAT....MAN!!!!!!
You damn ghouls. Like 7 days was a long time to wait. I hope all you pirates plan on paying for what you stole when it comes out.
Her second best next to The Velvet Rope (1997)
Standout Tracks:
Do It 2 Me
Get It Out Me
S.H.O.W. M.E.
This Body feat. Slim Thug
Daybreak
Enjoy
With U
I'm downloading it now, but 5 interludes is just too many.. so she basically has an album the length of Destiny's Fulfilled..
P.S. who gives a flying fuq about Marques Houston in this post? and I saw that picture two dayz ago and it has nuthin to do with him being gay or Chris Stokes.. Stop being so damn ignorant. Those shades are not gay or metrosexual either. As a matter of fact, most shades that anybody would wear are unisex, so please stfu..
Halfway through the album... the first one's beats are NICE!
The best track HANDS DOWN is "Do it 2 Me" .. The only other songs I like are "So Excited" (mildly) and "Enjoy"..
It's an aight album. I'm glad she's calmed down with the bait nastiness.
My fave track "Show me" - I LOVE that track.
I'm sorry "This Body" features Jermaine Dupri (Chopped and Screwed)
EVERYONE WHO HAS DOWNLOADED THIS NEEDS TO SUPPORT MS JANET AND BUY THIS INCREDIBLE ALBUM NEXT WEEK!!!
Okay, I am a certified Janet fan and was gonna wait until Tuesday to buy the album and take a listen, but after reading your negative commenst decided to give it a listen. What can I say? Your assertions that Janet is whispering all over the album are false. This joint is smoking and I see why her fans are losing it on her forums.Janet came back hard. The beats are funky and she is sassy and rapping on some of the joints. The interludes lead into the songs perfectly.I was scared of JD producing on this album but because all the songs are callaborations with Jimmy and Terry, Janet's trademark flava is never lost. This album is just amazing. It doesn't stop, from beginning to end it just slaps the schit outta you. This is what happens when you have talented producers to work with rather than just hip-hop beat makers.
HAS TOYA HEARD "CONTROL" AND "RHYTHM NATION" WHICH ARE BOTH AMAZING BECAUSE SHE IS MISSING A LOT. SHE ASKS AS IF THEY DONT EXIST.
I have Rhythm Nation & Control. To me they are classics BUT Janet and Velvet Rope are my favourite Janet albums. I'm just not that hot on this one.
You still make Janet sound like a welfare case whereas this album is actually good and Jermaine does not take it over. Each track was a complete collabo, even Call On Me.This album is all Jimmy and Terry with only minor hints of JD.I agree JD will never bring out the best in Janet, but again, the album is a straight collabo and is just amazing. No it isn't Janet or RN because it isn't as long but it is good, damn good and Janet shines on quite a few tracks.Big props though for giving Damita Jo the love it deserves and I know you Real cause you even called All For You out as a very bland album.I am personally fond of the new millineum Janet and feel like with each album since All For You she has shined. This album continues the trend is just great.
who cares about her? its not like i actually hear people talking about gettin the janet album... she still sucks and she wont sell... sorry janet stans...
Actually the best song on the cd "Do it 2 Me" is a JD track. and the album sucks to me.. nothing CLOSE to "I get So Lonely" here.
P.S. oh and Timbaland's best work UNDOUBTEDLY came out in Aaliyah. She is dead, yes, but there is no comparison to the work he did with her. You would think it was a different person.
I agree with you about that Aaliyah comment. If anything, it was Aaliyah that made Timbaland who he is but since she's dead, he's done good things with JT. You can't tell me that Cry Me A River wasn't an outstanding track.
Yeah I was quite shocked at the comment too, Toya. Nothing Timbaland has done compares to his work with Aaliyah. Especially not Timberlake whose album is just generic Timberland by numbers, not the fresh innovative Timbaland who produced "4 page letter" or "if your girl only knew" or "we need a resolution" or "make it hot" with nicole wray.
You can't deny the generic sounding, samey bullsh*t he came up with for Timberlake and Furtado is not a patch on those tracks. It's a shame that a producer once at the top of his game has become so...(i'll say it again)...generic. :-(
OK OK, Cry Me A River was something special, but I was not impressed with the new album at all.
Yes, because people were saying that JT's SexyBack was a rip-off of Nelly's Maneater.
THIS ALBUM IS A PIECE OF SHIT! I love Janet, but I'm not going to make any excuses for her. This is really bad.
*LMAOOOO*
WWW.JOYDENALANE.COM . Now this is what I call a good album. Y'all need to check this album out for real. As Randy Jackson from American Idol would say, "This girl is da bomb."
I think Timbaland best works is with Aaliyah, undeniable.
toya, is it me or u missed something...?u liked best work of Timbo came out with justin? r u serious?..hum better beleive ure not...can one material from justin can be compared to what aaliyah brought us..u also said best Rich Harrison came with Amerie...???r u saying beyoncé's collaboration with him wasnt' worth Amerie's? hope ure not serious..
well im not sayin like some ohe rpeople on this site Timbo hasnt done anything outstanding since Aaliyah is away...he DID do some good things, Cry Me A River was off the hook, i must admit..he did magic on Tweet's Souther Hummingbird, he got some crazy material for Missy, and many people..then, he was still doing r&b hip hop things..now hes in his POP mood with JT and Nelly F. I don't get him wrong cuz im a huge fan and better like to still hear from him with a different sound than not hearing him at all, but...i missed the aaliyah time of Timbo...Really
I am very dissapointed in this album. I was hoping she would come with a better comeback but this was not good at all. The only songs I can listen to all the way is "So Excited", "Take Care", and "Enjoy" the rest of them are mediocre. I would give this a 2/5 and I'm a Janet fan. I love her music back when she was Janet, Velvet Rope, and Design of a Decade Janet. This and along with Damita Jo are the worst. But I have to admit this is a hell of alot better than Damito Jo.
"20 Y.O" isn't a shit album, but it's not brilliant. When she comes correct, she comes CORRECT! ("Show me" gets played the hell out of! And "Daybreak" is banging! It reminds me of "Escapade")
I think everyone was too hard on "Damita Jo" as it had some stand out tracks which I loved. Such as: "SloLove", "Island life", "Just a little while" & "R&B Junkie". I liked the old skool throwback vibe.
I think the last wholly decent album Janet did was "The Velvet rope" - that had some stellar tracks. She sung instead of mumbled and she had this edge and substance to her which just doesn't seem to be there anymore.
Her best album IMO will always be "Rythym Nation 1814" - even NOW I still play the shit out of that record.
I think on "20 Y.O" she was trying too hard. She needs to capitalize on the songs and styles which work well for her. She usually shines on the uptempo tracks where she can let go and showcase her soft beautiful voice ("When I think of you", "Empty", "Together again") or her dark tones ("Pleasure principle", "State of the World")
