MOBO'S 2006 (REVIEW)

EVENTS
~
On Wednesaday 20th September, some of the biggest names in urban music came out to celebrate the so-called origin of black music. The MOBO Awards 2006 was held last night at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Sugababe Keisha Buchanan attends the MOBO Awards 2006, and poses back stage. Keisha's ex-band mate Mutya Buena (right) also turned up with her friends but why wasn't she seen any where near Keisha?

Keshia White did her thang.

The Mobo's (Music of Black Origin) was crapper than crap. The two presenters who hosted the show was stand-up comedian Gena Yashere and Gangster's Paradise rapper Coolio. Gena was so not funny. Her jokes were corny and unappealing. She was trying way too hard to be funny and her jokes weren't executed well at all. She is just too damn ghetto and over the top. There were technicalities throughout the show. I can't believe I watched this piece of crap. I know it was the first time they went live but it was poorly put together, the sounding was off and the performances were boring. The show opened with Rihanna singing Unfaithful and you could tell she was nervous as hell. She didn't seem to gain much confidence even when she was in darkness and then appeared from out the shadows in a tiny black PVC dress, much to the roars of an appreciative British crowd.

Keisha Buchanan from the Sugababes looked nice for a change. Hair was on point and she presented an award in a sexy little silver number. Keisha presented an award to Akala, a British Hip Hop artist who announced that back in Manchester tomorrow, he's supporting Jay-Z on his tour. Amerie came out and presented an award but Beyonce wasn't there to accept it so Amerie accepted it on her behalf. Amerie looked amazing. Black Eyed Peas won Best Group but they weren't there either. Half of the winners weren't even there. Corinne Bailey Rae performed Put Your Records On and sounded wonderful (no she wasn't lip-synching either). Then Lemar performed his latest single to date, It's Not That Easy. Cassie and Beenie man came onto the stage to present the award for Best R&B. Cassie was telling the crowd that it was her first time in the UK but when she announced the winner she was like: "She's my girl right there, it's Rihanna!" so Rihanna came onto the stage and hugged Cassie. In that category, Rihanna beat Ne-yo, Mary J Blige, Beyonce and Jamie Foxx. Jamelia performed Something About You. I didn't care for her performance but she did look good.

Kelle Bryan from ex-pop group Eternal looked good and she presented the award for Best Song. It was Beyonce's Deja Vu. Sean Paul won the Reggae category but the dancehall artist was nowhere in sight. Tim Westwood accepted the award. He apparently gave Westwood a message to read out to the crowd. I love Alesha Dixon but I can't understand how she was nominated for Best UK Female when Lipstick was a major flop. It was as if they didn't have any valid nominees so they put up ANYBODY, just to fill up the category not to mention that Alesha's song was pop/rock. Jamelia has disassociated herself with anything to do with black-origin music by performing a ROCK song. Her song is not black-origin orientated. Letoya Luckett performed Torn! I so wasn't expecting that! She looked beautiful! The hair, the aqua coloured long dress and her vocals were very impressive (well of course, duh, she was lip-synching) but to say this was her first major British performance, she did fantastic.

Best International Male. Chris Brown, Ne-yo, Pharrell Williams, Kanye West and Jay-Z were ALL nominees but Jay-Z won the nomination. He wasn't there. It was weird because when they showed Jay-Z, they showed the Deja Vu video. I'm sorry, why was Jay-Z nominated? Deja Vu is BEYONCE'S song not Jay-Z's. I mean, Jay-Z hasn't released any new music in like months and he was still nominated. Once again, another mockery from the MOBO Awards where it completely loses its credibility. International female Award was presented by Mica Paris. Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys (they showed the Babycham video and Alicia hasn't released any of her own music in like two years so why the fuck wasn't Mariah Carey nominated?). Beyonce, Nelly Furtado and Mary J Blige were all nominees. Beyonce won in that category and the crowd BOOED!!! Did anybody catch that? LMAO. Mica Paris was like: "Yo, it aint my fault, I don't decide". I think they were expecting it to be Janet.

Well, that was basically it for me. I didn't see no well-known international superstars. Soul "legend" Sam Moore you could say, but not big in MY generation and who was the other superstar suppose to be? Coolio? Oh okay, whatever. Anyway Sam Moore was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. They showed a clip of American Idol judge Randy Jackson complimenting him. They closed off the show with Sam Moore collaborating with new British R&B singer Keisha White. He sang I Can't Stand The Rain because originally, it's his song, and Keisha joined him, then he sang Soulman. I had no idea Keisha White was only 20 years old. She looks older than me, but beautiful nevertheless. The show was a letdown to me and the ONLY highlight of the show was Letoya Luckett's performance. Other than that, it wasn't worth tuning in for at all.

Weeeell.....

I was doin my net radio show on Warrior while it was on, but I managed to turn the TV up when Jamelia was on, how shit was that!!!

Highlight of what I saw was Mica announcing Beyonce won & the crowd boo'ing, quality!!

MOBO's is shit, stick to underground music, like I said this week - Quality is something you have to look for, its doesnt find you.

Great review Toya btw.

Tho just like to say, Jamelia's Rock tune, crap as it is, is music of black origin, coz all music comes from black music, listen to a track by MOS DEF called Rock n Roll ;)

i did'nt even bother to watch the MOBO's be cause i knew it was gonna be shit.

THERE WERE ONLY 14 CATEGORIES AND NO AWARDS FOR BEST ALBUM, SO LOTS OF PEOPLE WERE MISSING FROM THIS LIST THEY MISSED OUT
OMARION, RAY J, KEYSHIA COLE, MH, BOBBY V,BOW WOW,BROOKE VALENTINE,AKON, CHRISTINA MILLIAN,D4L, DONELL JONES, FAITH EVANS , INDIA IRE, MARIAH CEARY,NELLY,TI, JAGGED EDGY & TEEDRA MOSES,SO MANY
THOSE R JUST THE US ARTIST SO MANY UK ARTISTS WERE MISSING TOO.

Best international male JAY Z , HE AIN'T EVEN GOT ANY MUSIC OUT JUST SHOWS UP ON DIFFERENT PEOPLE SINGLES AND BEYONCE, JANET JACKSON, ALESHA DIXON AND JAMEILA ALBUM ARE NOT EVEN OUT YET THEY ONLY JUST PUT OUT THERE SINGLES, I WANT TO KNOW WHO MAKING THE NOMINATIONS BECAUSE THEY DID THE SAME THING LAST YEAR AND THEY KEEP DOING IT.

IF THERE GONNA PUT PEOPLE THAT ONLY GOT SINGLES OUT SINGLES YOU SHOULD PUT CIARA, CHERISH, CHAMILLIONATIE, DEM FRANCHIES BOYS,CHRISTINA AGUILERA, DIDDY,DMX,KELIS,NAS, FERGIE, JUSTINE TIMBERLAKE, LETOYA LUCKETT, KELLY ROWLAND, TRINA, MAGAN ROCHELL,MYA, MUSIQ, AVANT, BLACK BUTTFLIES, CASSIE, GUINWINE, USHER SO ON ITS A JOKE

I THINK WE SHOULD JUST WATCH THE UNDERGROUND AWARDS AND CHANNELU AWARD CAUSE IF WE GIVE THEM THE BACKING THEY WILL BECOME BIG THE WAY THE MOBO'S UESD TO BE.
YOU CAN TELL THAT THE BBC DID'NT CARE ABOUT THE MOBO'S FROM THEY PUT IT ON BBC3 INSTEAD OF BBC1,2 EVEN THEY THINK ITS A JOKE.

I think for the most i had my head in my hands!!!

Poor isn't the word!!

Gena... She looked horrid, uncomfortable!! Was about as funny as child porn and just made a cunt of herself.

Why was coolio there??? pretty random.. and unneeded!!! Added to the 'crapness' of the night.

Rhianna... What the fuck was that? She sang the song so slow (anyone notice?) It dragged her voice was whiney.. couldve hit her with the mic!!!

Keisha White... I thought she was a tranny... she's 20? she looks like she's mid 30's.. nuff about her.

Jamelia looked good sounded shit.. whats new there.. she so pointless.

Lemar sounded great

Letoya sounded great, i thought she was live to be honest.

You can see how much the MOBOs has gone down the pan as there was no high profile celebs there.

Amerie and Rhianna was there but they're not A list like your Beyonces and Xtinas. And Rhianna needs all the awards she get get next to her name right now.

How empty was it there aswell and how crap is the bristish crowd they dont cheer and support they're own acts at all!!!

I can't see the MOBOs lasting for much longer and has complete;ly lost its appeal it has a few years back!!!

NOW GO CHECK OUT MY FAVE UK GIRL, IM ALWAYS SHOUTING HER OUT!!!

Actually, Alicia Keys has released material in the past two years. She had an Unplugged album out in late 2005, including singles such as Unbreakable.

[On that Mis-teeq chick that never used to sing...]
Someone shoulda told her she had a dead Peacock caught on the heel of her shoe.

[On Mutya...]
The 2 chicks she's rolling with look more flash than she does! *lol* Then again, it's only the MOBO's. No point going all out for that piece of shit! Also, isn't that chick in the middle Shola Ama!?

[On Keisha White...]
In that first pic on the left, she looks like Juwanna Man.

i have never even heard of these awards until 05. how long has this been going on ?

it's good to know that i am not the only one who noticed that alicia keys has been getting nominated for alot of awards and hasn't put out in recent music. she's still being nominated for the diary of alicia keys and that album came out in 04 ( i'm not talking about the MOBO awards . i'm talking about other award shows). BTW before ya'll say i'm hating on her, i love alicia keys and her music, but if you go to youtube.com and look up BET awards 05 and the NAACP awards you'll see what i'm talking about .
