Appropriately sampling Robin Thicke's "Lost Without You", he pays homage to all the greats that we've lost over the years and recently - James Brown, Aaliyah, Lisa "Lefteye" Lopes, Biggie, Rick Ross, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Jam Master Jay amongst others. Props to him for coming into the industry and acknowledging that the music scene has turned into a crock of bullshit over the years. The question is, when his debut album "Back of my Lac" drops on the 2nd October via Capitol records, will it be indicative of something refreshing, something that will have us believing that good ole-skool R&B is finally coming back to the Y2K's?
Music has in fact changed and not lived up to the standard when R&B music was once considered classified gold. Today's male R&B acts sees Lloyd, Omarion, Joe, Bobby Valentino, Mario, Chris Brown, Ne-yo, Tank, Tyrese, R.Kelly and Usher contributing to the scene amongst the herd of noteworthy male vocal talent to hit us this era. BUT I can't help but think that everything is sounding way too derivative, from the overly-synthesized beats to the same wax-that-ass type song concepts. I enjoy their music but I still believe something is missing. I miss vintage Ginuwine, Donell Jones and Montell Jordan. Montell's "This Is How We It", Ginuwine's "Pony" and Case's "Touch Me Tease Me" had me punching the air in triumph but today's male artists not so much. J.Holiday has mad potential and his current baby-making old-skool jam "Bed" serves as an interesting lead single. His sexy vocals seduce you throughout the song especially when he switches into his lower register and draws you in. Right at that moment, a BED and a sexy man is all you can think of .... plus it doesn't hurt that he's cute.
I think that he is all sorts of cool with semi sex appeal (he could do with beefing up a bit) and he can more than hold a tune. He appears to be a bag of chips and so much more. As for the mixtape, he's new to the scene and it's a fantastic idea because it serves as a great promotional marketing tool for the artist. Tracks like "Be With Me", "Bed", "Don't Wanna Lose" and one or two others are some of the few that I would love to hear on his debut. Some of the tracks did have me raising my eyebrows though. However, in the track "R&B Is Dead" he says there's too much sampling (seeing as though this is a mixtape I won't get into that ass for the contradiction) but that "Marvin Gaye would be rolling over in his grave" line stopped me dead in my tracks *LMAO! CTFU!* Let's hope his debut album convinces us that real R&B is coming back in true style.
