MS KELLY: KELLY ROWLAND & DESTINATION MOON: DEBORAH COX (ALBUM REVIEWS) & MORE!!!

Ms Kelly exudes new confidence
Written by Toya

Kelly's new album Ms Kelly leaked last night and the album is solely a nice effort and definitely a huge step-up from her Simply Deep debut which I thought was doo-doo on a stick.

Beyonce's lil sis Solange who wrote Love did a wonderful job on that track. Her writing skills have definitely improved over the years. She is definitely proving herself to be a sheer talent in that aspect and I look forward to her future endeavours.

Other tracks that depict Kelly's romantic but vulnerable side include Still In Love With My Ex, This Is Love and Every Thought Is You which displays Kelly's harmonious but very underrated vocal ability. And it was also nice to hear that Kelly was being herself and wasn't channelling somebody else's sound/vocal style.

Ghetto which features Snoop and will be the 2nd single is pretty laidback with an airy but sexy vocal where she shows all of her appreciation for a ghetto man, whereas Comeback, one of my favourites packs in some raw punch. The Show is a chilled-back R&B track which features R&B singer Tank and the track Better Without You is well polished and shows Kelly at her confident best.

Overall, I am really happy that this album does not represent the lacking lead single Like This. However, Ms Kelly has nice beats, standard vocal arrangement and you can just really chill to it because it has so many laidback elements. It's definitely worth checking for.

Ms Kelly drops 25th June in Europe and 3rd July in the US.

Deborah's Destination Moon bores us with big band classics
Written by Toya

This isn't just your typical R&B album or it isn't sounding anything like her previous stuff. Destination Moon is actually a big-band tribute to the late singer Dinah Washington comprised of blues and jazz.

I've been a fan of Deborah's music over the years but realistically, this sort of music isn't really my cup of tea and comes across as simply lifeless and dull.

A heavy orchestra can be heard in most of the tracks such as Destination Moon and Squeeze Me. And I partially liked the slower tracks such as Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and Look To The Rainbow because any Deborah fan would know she left her mark stimulating her powerhouse vocals over big ballads and even on these tracks she doesn't really give as good as she's got.

C'mon Deborah, please go back to the music we all love and enjoy! Destination Moon was released yesterday.

SINGLES REVIEWS

Cherry Pop - Olivia feat Missy [Download]

Cherry pop, Candy shop, what's next? Apple Gobstoppers? If I hear another track from this chick with any sort of sugary analogy, I think I'm going to go completely insane. This track is just straight corny to me. She sure can pop her way elsewhere - into the has-been archive. Cherry Pop is slated to be the first single off Olivia's forever-pushed-back album Behind Closed Doors (after two years of album push-backs, you'd have at least expect her to start a fresh by changing the album title, at least Mya did ala Control Freak in exchange of Liberation). The track is produced by Missy and Robin Thicke (Shame on you Robin). Not surprised at Missy because she hasn't produced a decent record in years. Anyway, after being dropped by G-Unit, Olivia is releasing her new music independently.

Do You (remix) - Ne-yo feat Mary J Blige [Download]

This remix is alright in my book. I love Do You and it is one of my favourite tracks off Ne-yo's new album Because of You. However, the new wave of remixes has become somewhat of a bore. The beats stay the same and they just digitally edit another artist's voice into the song. But Mary is cool in my book and her verse was pretty interesting.

R&B Bites

1. Read Part 2 of Tameka Foster's intervew here.
2. Monica is dropping another album real soon.

Stay tuned!
